Tim Murphy

Tim Murphy was born and raised on Mercer Island, long before it became known for its affluence. His family’s roots on the island go back to when his grandparents purchased an acre of land for just $600, and his father could only afford a small summer cabin after World War II.

Tim’s education began at St. Monica School, where he was taught by the great Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, followed by O’Dea High School and the University of Notre Dame, with graduate work at the University of Washington. During his early years, he worked various jobs, including mowing lawns, delivering papers, and working at the Mercer Island Bowl and Jade House as a dishwasher.

After earning his degree, Tim spent a year teaching at St. Monica School, followed by stints as a substitute teacher and bus driver, and eventually, a teaching position at Shelton High School. In 1977, Tim married Patti Early, and soon after, he started a decade-long career with Coca-Cola. In 1988, he was diagnosed with cancer, which led him to transition to teaching physical education for K-8 students at Sacred Heart School in Bellevue. During his 25-year tenure there, Tim also worked with his son in youth ministry, where they led 13 service trips to Tijuana to help build homes for the poor.

Now retired, Tim drives a bus for the Covenant Living community and continues his work in ministry. For the past nine years, he has collaborated with Doug Johnson to lead men’s retreats at the Peace and Spirituality Center in Bellevue. Tim also serves as the lay minister to St. Bernard’s Chapel at Snoqualmie Pass, where he will celebrate his 26th year in this role at the start of Advent.

Tim and his wife Patti have two sons and six grandchildren and now reside in Providence Point retirement community in Issaquah. He remains active in his community, coaching various youth sports, serving as Cross-Country Commissioner for CYO Athletics, and presenting at national education conferences on preparing students and parents for the transition to high school and life beyond.
