Paul J. Schutz

Paul J. Schutz is an associate professor and interim director of the Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries at Santa Clara University. His teaching and research focus on the meaning and significance of creation within the Christian tradition, emphasizing how scientific research can inform religious accounts of humanity’s relationship with other-than-human creatures.

A native of Evansville, Indiana, Schutz holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Fordham University. His doctoral dissertation explored the theological writings of Jesuit astrophysicist William Stoeger, proposing an “ecopolitical” theology aimed at the flourishing of all creatures. His ongoing scholarship applies Stoeger’s framework to contemporary issues, including gender, race, interreligious dialogue (particularly with Buddhism), prayer, liturgy, and ministry.

Schutz is an active member of the College Theology Society and the Catholic Theological Society of America. His book, A Theology of Flourishing: The Fullness of Life for All Creation (Orbis Books, June 2025), proposes a transformative theological approach centered on flourishing as God’s fundamental intention for creation. Drawing from scripture, tradition, and contemporary theology, the book offers a hope-filled vision of Christian life, addressing modern crises of injustice, inequality, and ecological destruction.
